To intensify the fight against substance abuse the City of Cape Town has established an interdepartmental task team.

This was announced during a meeting called by the municipality's Housing and Safety and Security Directorates after it emerged that drugs and alcohol were being trafficked from council owned dwellings.

"The Planning Department will identify council-owned properties where illegal structures have been added for the illicit trade in drugs and alcohol and court orders will be obtained for the destruction of such structures," said task team member Glen Kleinsmith.

He said the Cape Town Metropolitan Police would collaborate with the South African Police Services (SAPS) to expedite the arrest and prosecution of those involved.

"The housing department has been given more than 300 addresses which are being illegally used as drug dens and shebeens," said Mr Kleinsmith.

The areas that were of most concern were the in Atlantis, Macassar, Ocean View, Ravensmead, Manenburg, Langa, Gugulethu and Mitchell's Plain.

He said these premises will be visited, inspected and, if evidence is obtained of illegal activities, the law enforcement agencies will then move quickly to put an end to them.

"We should say goodbye to the scenario where SAPS and Metro police members raid shebeens and drug houses on a daily basis and the culprits blithely continue their destruction of our communities," said Mr Kleinsmith, adding that the synergies between the involved departments will be improved. - BuaNews
