According to police superintendant Billy Jones, a Somerset West creche owner and her employee were arrested in connection with giving Valium to children in their care. The two were charged in the Somerset West Magistrates Court with contravening the legislation pertaining to the dispensing of medication.

Creche owner Monica Helm, and her employee Angeline Carolus, are alleged to have given the drug to the children in their care in order to get them to sleep.

Valium is a well-known sedative that works by slowing down the movement of chemicals in the brain. Its side-effects include drowsiness, fatigue, loss of muscle coordination, and in less common cases can also cause constipation, depression, hallucinations, low blood pressure, rage, seizures, skin rashes and slurred speech amongst others.

Helm and Carolus were each released on R1 000 bail, and will reappear in 2008.
