A section of the N2 Freeway near Strand was blocked yesterday by residents from the Lwandle area who were left homeless after a fire destroyed their homes over the past weekend.

The freeway was closed for a number of hours after the protesters burnt tyres and hurled stones at the passing traffic. Motorists were advised to use the R44 through Gordons Bay instead of the direct route via the N2.

The homeless victims are to be relocated to Vlakteplaas, which is less than 2km from the area destroyed by the fire.

It is expected that preparations in the new area would take 12 days. Thereafter, the residents will be given building materials to construct their new dwellings.
