An alleged conman has appeared before magistrate, Amrith Chabilall, in the Bellville Magistrates Court. He faces nine counts of fraud involving nearly R80 000.

Deon Thirion, a Kuils River businessman who trades as Perfect Welding, is alleged to have taken deposits for up to R26 000 for galvanised gates and then not delivering them. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Durbanville resident, Pieter Smit, told the court that he signed a R10 300 contract with Thirion and paid a R5 000 deposit to purchase materials needed for a galvanised gate. He stated that Thirion did not deliver any goods and repeatedly requested more time to complete the work. He later asked for a further R2 000 to pay for the galvanising - arousing Smit's suspicions.
