Radovan Krejcir, who has been wanted by police on a charge of fraud relating to R4.5 million, has handed himself over to the Hawks.

The 42-year-old Czech fugitive handed himself over to the head of the Hawks in Gauteng, Lt General Shadrack Sibiya, through his lawyer in the early hours of Friday morning and was immediately detained.

"Krejcir was wanted on a charge of fraud relating to the R4.5 million claim he allegedly made to an insurance company after managing to obtain medical papers saying he had cancer. He is also being questioned regarding the death of Cyril Beeka, who was gunned down in a drive-by shooting in Cape Town earlier this week," said police spokesperson McIntosh Polela.

He said the Hawks had raided Krejcir's house in Bedfordview on Tuesday night, but did not find him on the premises. It has been alleged that a hit list was found during the raid, which included the names of Beeka, security consultant Paul O'Sullivan and a state prosecutor.

"We immediately extended an invitation to Krejcir to hand himself over - stressing that it was in his best interest to do so. Since then, Krejcir played a cat and mouse game with law enforcement agencies. He made several appointments, promising to hand himself over - but repeatedly failed to do so," said Polela.

He said that it was possibly because of the pressure applied by the Hawks through several measures, including the media, that Krejcir eventually handed himself over.

Polela said the SAPS management, led by National Commissioner General Bheki Cele, would like to thank members of the public who phoned and offered assistance regarding Krejcir's possible whereabouts, as well as police members who spent sleepless nights in the hunt for the Czech suspect.

A date for his court appearance has not yet been released. - BuaNews
