Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Communications is calling on the public to nominate individuals to fill non-executive vacancies of the SABC board.

Formal advertisements calling on people to make their nominations for the four vacancies that have opened up will be placed in this week's weekend papers, said committee chairperson Ismail Vadi.

The vacancies are a result of the resignation and acceptance by President Jacob Zuma of the board's deputy chairperson Felleng Sekha and board members Barbara Masekela, David Niddrie and Makgatho Mello from the Department of Communications.

Experience in media law, business practice and finance, marketing and journalism, broadcasting policy and technology as well as social and labour issues are some of expertise needed for nomination for the board.

"The candidates must also be committed to fairness, freedom of expression, openness and accountability," said the committee.

The committee will then compile a shortlist of candidates, conduct interviews and present its findings to the National Assembly for recommendation to Zuma for final appointment.

Nominations close on 15 November 2010.

On Wednesday, at its meeting with the public broadcaster, the committee recommended that a turnaround strategy for the public broadcaster must be tabled before it on 10 November 2010. - BuaNews
