Train commuters were left frustrated on the morning of 11 September 2007 after enduring a series of delays and cancellations due to a bomb threat that was received in Cape Town. The threat affected trains on the Northern Line which runs through areas such as Bellville, Kraaifonten, Stellenbosch, Strand and Wellington.

Zinobulali Mihi, the Corporate Communication Manager for Metrorail Western Cape stated that they (Metrorail) have been experiencing a spate of bomb threats recently, numbering about two to three per day.

"Metrorail, in conjunction with the SAPS, Railway Police, Bomb Squad and the Dog Unit have a joint have a joint contingency plan ensuring the safety and security of our customers," Mihi said.

The threat caused delays to approximately 80 trains, resulting in a loss of over 3000 minutes and the effects were felt for the rest of the week.

The bomb threats came amid a marked increase in the number of hoax calls received by Paramedics in the Bellville area and other bomb threats received at locations in the city. It is also uncanningly close to the anniversary of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre in the USA.
