Six experienced staff members, trained in horticulture and mentored by the City of Cape Town's Parks Department, hope they will improve on the Silver Laurel award garnered by their colleagues at last year's Sunday Tribune Garden and Leisure Show, when they return to Pietermaritzburg early next month.

he Sunday Tribune Garden and Leisure Show will run from 3 - 5 October 2008. It is South Africa's most important horticultural show and places a specific emphasis on municipal and corporate gardens. The event has been hosted annually since 1975 by the Royal Agricultural Society of Natal in Pietermaritzburg.

"Last year the show featured 49 gardens with designs from the practical to the surreal all of which received acclaim from the panel of professional Chelsea-mentored judges. Held over three days, it attracted 18 900 visitors," said Yasmine Colley, Project Manager.

This year, the theme is "Gardening with Colour". Six staff members were nominated by management for their enthusiasm and expertise and their participation provides an ideal opportunity for skills development, training and education. The team is:

* Yasmine Colley (project manager)
* Lynn January (group leader)
* Jacobus Verwey (mentor)
* Jonathan Claasen
* Nicholas Wannenburgh
* Brian van Wyk
* Bronwen Williams

The aim of the project is to build staff morale and confidence, and this has already been achieved through the team's hard work.

The team will build a prototype of their Pietermaritzburg exhibition and display it at the Newlands Nursery. On their return, the exhibition will be displayed at the Cape Town Civic Centre.
