No Newlands magic for South Africa

South Africa's magical performances came to an end today after a dismal effort against India in the Twenty20 Cricket World Cup tournament. The defeat was seen as a huge disappointment after the Proteas put up an exceptional show under the influence of the Old Lady's magic wand.

The result of another match where both teams would've liked to have exorcised the demon of the ODI World Cup: India 153/5 | RSA 116/9

The reputation that the Proteas have of being chokers was just too much.

In the 10th over India was struggling at 61 with four key batsmen already back in the pavilion. They managed to steady the boat to reach a total of 153/5 - a modest total to at any stretch of imagination. Thus leaving South Africa having to attain a mere 126 runs to post a berth in the semi-finals.

However, when Gibbs, Smith, AB Kemp and Pollock were all dismissed for under 50 runs, the Proteas must have wished Kallis was there.

After 20 overs, they could only muster a total of 116, thanks to Mark Boucher (36) and Albie Morkel (36). Smith correctly described it as a major disappointment.

India went through to the Semi-finals at Newlands on Saturday.
