Men on the Side of the Road (MSR) is a non-profit organisation that seeks to facilitate the entry of low-skill workers into our growing economy and the City of Cape Town has agreed to grant-in-aid funding of R250 000 for the MSR's tourism-related project, the Cape Town Tjommies.

"The Tjommies will be trained to assist tourists and provided with maps, guides and season specific information. They will be deployed across the city at strategic tourism points to maximise their influence on service delivery." said Councillor Simon Grindrod, Mayoral Committee Member for Social, Economic Development and Tourism.

"The Tourism Industry welcomed the implementation of the pilot project during the festive season and we want to build on this performance leading up to hosting the Soccer World Cup in 2010", he said.

It is envisaged that the Tjommies project will create an entry point into tourism for unemployed people and provide them with the opportunity to access employment opportunities in different segments of the industry.
