After receiving a tip-off, the City of Cape Town's Non-ferrous Metal Task Team (the Copperheads) have swooped on an illegal scrap yard in Kraaifontein and uncovered stolen municipal property on the premises.

According to head of the task team, Councillor Pieter van Dalen, during the raid on Kraaifontein Recycling in Peerless Park the Copperheads uncovered parts of a traffic light that belonged to the Council. The owner was promptly arrested. Further investigation showed that there were numerous additional infringements by the owner.

Residents in the area have laid complaints regarding the theft of water meters and taps. Information about the taps found on the premises were handed in to SAPS for further investigation.

Van Dalen warned scrap dealers that, "if they dont get their act together they will feel the full might of the law no matter how small the offence." He added that, "the onus is on the owner of the scrap yard to get acquainted with the Second-Hand Goods Act."
