The man charged with the rape and murder of 11-year-old Annestacia Wiese has caused his trial to be postponed after he refused to get into the police vehicle that carries awaiting trial prisoners to court.

When acting Judge Richard Brusser entered the court shortly before lunchtime, Patrick Loots, counsel for the defence, apologised for the delay and explained to the court that his client had been assaulted several times in the past while being transported. Due to fear, he thus refused to get into the police vehile when it arrived at Pollsmoor Prison.

Loots then requested a postponement until Wednesday, saying that he would use the break to consult with his client

The magistrate said that he needed an assurance that the delay would not reoccur and said that, if necessary, he would issue a court order for the man's safe conveyance to the court.

The man has not yet been formally charged with the crime and may thus not be named.
