The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has completed recounting votes in all the 23 disputed constituencies and results are being transmitted to the Chief Elections Officer for collation with the initial records, says Deputy Chief Elections Officer Utloile Silaigwana.

He said on Monday that the statistics would be fed into computers, after which the Chief Elections Officer would invite the four presidential candidates for verification and collation, leading to the announcement of the presidential election results.

"The vote recounting exercise has been completed in all constituencies," Mr Silaigwana said.

On Saturday, ZEC Chairman Justice George Chiweshe told a media conference that recounting in five constituencies was expected to be completed by Monday, after which the Chief Elections Officer would invite the presidential candidates for a verification and collation exercise leading to announcement of the results.

Mr Chiweshe said the verification and collation exercise could, however, be avoided if figures that the four candidates collected from polling stations tallied with those of the ZEC.

He revealed that the Chief Elections Officer had struck a deal with the four presidential candidates that each brings his own figures which their election agents collected at polling stations and if these tallied, they would be declared as the official results.

However, should there be discrepancies in the figures, then, the long and cumbersome process of verification and collation would take place.

Mr Silaigwana could not state whether or not there had been any changes in the five constituencies that were remaining as he had not seen the results, which were being transmitted by hand on the original stipulated forms to avoid distortions.

There were no changes in the results in the other 18 contested constituencies where recounting was completed last week.

A number of ZEC officials have been arrested for transmitting incorrect information to the National Command Centre during the 29 March elections.

The ZEC has come under fire both locally and internationally for delaying the release of results of the presidential election with some parties accusing it of conniving with the ruling Zanu PF to doctor the figures and rig the election. - BuaNews-NNN
