In an effort to ensure road safety and curb drag racing, City Traffic Services held an operation in Eerste River on Thursday night, 16 April 2009.

The areas concentrated on were Stellenbosch Arterial and Wesbank Main Road.

"When Traffic Services arrived on the scene approximately 20 cars and 50 spectators were milling around. The drivers scrambled to get to their vehicles, started performing and wheel-spinning. In an attempt to get away, a number of vehicles also disregarded stop signs," says Chief Inspector Merle Lourens, media spokesperson for Cape Town Traffic Services.

"Various fines were also issued including one for inconsiderate driving, 19 for disregarding the stop sign, 29 unlicensed drivers, 15 unlicensed vehicles, 19 for defective lights and 20 other defects to the value of R46 800.00. Six motorists were also fined for not having number plates fitted to their cars," says Lourens.

Basic checks on 15 vehicles, including a taxi, were done and all were found to be unroadworthy. These were summarily suspended from use on a public road.

"Although insufficient resources remain a constraint for Traffic Services, we will make every effort to rid our city's streets of dragsters," Lourens added.
