Station commissioners across the country are to receive management training to better prepare all station commissioners for the challenging work of running a police station.

The Station Management Learning Programme follows the restructuring exercise which will help allocate appropriate human and material resources at the local police station level.

This was announced by Security Minister Charles Nqakula on Wednesday during his department's budget speech in Parliament.

By September this year all station commissioners should be trained in all the necessary modules.

He said he aimed to have 201 300 members in the South African Police Services, up from 173 241, by the end of March 2011 and these members would also need to be trained.

An estimated R947 million will be spent for training programmes, including basic training.

"Others who will undergo the different levels of training are 120 senior officers who will be trained for executive development, while 540 officers will receive training for middle management," said Mr Mqakula.

Over the past three financial years the department has increased the allocated budget for policing by 38 percent.

"Expenditure on police work, as indicated in the Estimates of National Expenditure will increase strongly, rising from R36.4 billion in the 2007/08 financial year, to R49.4 billion in the 2010/11 financial year.

"This indicates a 35.9 percent increase over the MTEF period."

Expenditure for other material resources in the policing environment such as buildings, machinery and equipment, has also seen significant increases.

Part of the plans, the department had going forward, include the construction of a new police headquarters, which will also house several divisions of the police to allow for better command and control.

Further he said in the next medium term expenditure cycle additional personnel will be recruited across the entire policing spectrum, especially with respect to local policing, railway policing, detectives, and ports of entry. - BuaNews
