Western Cape residents have been called on to participate in the public hearings regarding the Draft Regulations on the Provincial Petitions Act.

The Act allows ordinary citizens to complain, request and forward a representation or submission to the Legislature on any matter of public concern or grievance pertaining to the Legislature, any provincial department including official provincial body.

The Western Cape Legislature reminded the public that they can use petitions as a tool to bring matters to the attention of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament and participate in the processes of the institution.

As part of its oversight function and holding government to account, the Provincial Parliament will then investigate the matter with a view to resolve the resident's concerns.

The draft regulations were published on 18 June in the Provincial Gazette Extraordinary.

The public hearings, hosted by the Provincial Parliament, will be held on Tuesday in the Provincial Building at 7, Wale Street, Cape Town.

Further hearings will then be held in various parts of the province from July to August to ensure the voices of all residents in the province are heard.

Hearings in Laingsburg will be held on 29 July, Bredasdorp on 5 August, Ladysmith on 12 August, Ceres on 19 August and Saldanha on 26 August.

Any matter may be referred to the Public Protector if the conduct of a person or body is unsatisfactory.

The petitioner may submit the matter in any of the official languages of the province and must be informed of the progress or refusal to consider the matter.

Petitions may be submitted by mail, delivery, e-mail and online and dealt with against set time-lines.

A special committee has been established to consider the petitions - BuaNews
