Cheslyn Williams, accused of the murder of Durbanville guesthouse owner Renate Kellerman, is to conduct his own defence. He has yet to plead to the charge against him.

Williams is accused of repeatedly stabbing the 39 year old mother of two during his stay at her guesthouse in Durbanville in July 2006. He had been on vacation with then girlfriend and Idols winner Karen Kortje.

He was arrested in Elsies River a day after the victim's body had been found. It is alleged that he also stole her car as well as other personal items.

Since the commencement of the trial, two defense attorneys have withdrawn from the case and Williams has also shunned legal aid as well as the opportunity to apply for a private attorney paid for by the State. Legal aid attorney Dercia Rabie withdrew from the case on August 7, because the accused had repeatedly failed to co-operate in giving his version of the events.

At a court appearance on 24 August 2007, magistrate Johan Vermaak asked Williams to confirm that he understood the implications of conducting his own defence. He acknowledged that his decision could be to his own detriment but maintained that he wanted to conduct his own defence.

Williams will remain in custody until his next appearance.
