South African Banking Risk information Centre (SABRIC) has issue a warning that card fraud is increasing - particularly in the Western Cape.

Gilbert Swats, Chief Executive of SABRIC, said that the Western Cape accounted for more than half of all card fraud in the country.

The banking industry reported that, for the period from the first part of 2006 up until the same period in 2007, card fraud had increased by nearly 59%. They also reported that the fraudulent use of lost and stolen cards had increased by 81% during the same period.

Service stations, grocery stores, supermarkets, liquor stores and restaurants are the types of businesses where most card-related fraud is committed, while the areas of Mitchell's Plain, Bellville, Athlone, Grassy Park, Parow, Sea Point and Goodwood have been identified as "high risk" areas within the City of Cape Town.
