City of Cape Town Metro Police officers arrested nine suspects yesterday 09 March 2011 during operations in Ravensmead, Kraaifontein and Eerste River.

Metro Police officers executed searches at 20 tuck shops in Ravensmead, during a joint operation with the South African Police Services, Customs, and the City's Land Use and Law Enforcement sections. The operation was planned after officers received tip-offs from members of the public that counterfeit goods were being sold at local tuck shops.

Customs officials confiscated two gambling machines as well as illegal cigarettes and matches. Metro Police K-9 Unit officers arrested one suspect for possession of illegal narcotics after half a Mandrax tablet and two dagga 'stoppe' were found in his possession. Officers also confiscated 32 packets of TIK which were found abandoned in Coronation Street.

Later that evening, officers arrested four suspects in Kraaifontein for dealing in drugs and alcohol. Another four suspects were arrested in Eerste River on charges of possession of illegal narcotics and fraud after they were found with drugs, fake ID books and All-Pay cards.

The following items were confiscated:

  • 1 TIK lollie
  • 9 units of TIK
  • 1 dagga parcel
  • 9 dagga 'stoppe'
  • 33 x 5 litre bottles of wine
  • 4 cases of beer
  • R22000 in cash
  • 4 Identity Documents
  • 4 All-Pay cards

Officers also issued 120 fines to the value of R46200.

"Assistance from members of the public is essential in combating crime and greatly assists our law enforcement agencies. I encourage all residents to report any suspicious activity to their local authority. I commend the Metro Police for their continued efforts," said the City's Executive Mayor, Alderman Dan Plato.
