Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo Ngcuka has commended the Western Cape community of Masiphumelele for its efforts in trying to reintegrate people from other countries who were displaced after recent attacks.

"... the story of [what happened in] Masiphumelele needs to be told to the rest of the country - so that others can learn and do the same," she said, after visiting three areas in the Western Cape on Friday.

According to the presidency, community members and leaders in the Masiphumelele areas collected stolen goods and spread a message of reintegration after attacks on people from other countries which began in Gauteng on 11 May 2008 and spread to six other provinces.

Ms Mlambo Ngcuka had received a report that a Rapid Response Committee was formed in the Masiphumelele area to quickly deal with the ensuing violence.

The deputy president was accompanied by the Ministers of Public Works and of Arts and Culture, the Premier of the Western Cape, Cape Town Mayor Helen Zille, senior government officials and community leaders for the visit to Du Noon, Masiphumelele and Khayelitsha.

The Deputy President thanked the community, volunteers, churches, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), the police and all who took time out of their schedules to land a helping hand to people affected.

She called on the community to assist in uprooting the criminal elements who perpetrated acts of violence.

National Police spokesperson Sally De Beer on Saturday said the death toll from the recent wave of attacks has risen to 62 after a number of people died in hospital, 670 are injured and tens of thousands have been displaced.

Thousands of Mozambican and Zimbabweans nationals have returned to their countries of birth since outbreaks of violence was sparked by poor South Africans who blamed people from other countries for taking jobs. - BuaNews
