Motorists are set to dig deeper into their pockets when the petrol price increases on Wednesday.

The retail petrol price is set to increase by between 66 cents and 68 cents a litre.

The Department of Minerals and Energy said 91 octane unleaded petrol is expected to rise by 68 cents a litre, 93 octane unleaded and Lead Replacement Petrol by 67 cents a litre, and 95 octane petrol will increase by 66 cents a litre.

The wholesale price of diesel with a sulphur content of 0.005 percent will increase by 130 cents a litre.

The wholesale price of illuminating paraffin is set to rise by 118 cents a litre, and the single maximum national retail price for illuminating paraffin by 157 cents a litre.

Earlier this month petrol price increased by 61 cents a litre.

According to the department, the increase is due to the high prices on crude oil and the weak Rand prices.

Last month's petrol price hike prompted the taxi industry to announce fare increases, saying high fuel prices and a lack of a subsidised rate from government made it difficult for the industry to operate. - BuaNews
