The charges brought against Helen Zille in connection with an anti-drug protest in September have been dropped. Zille, the Cape Town and also the leader of the Democratic Alliance was arrested in Mitchells Plain during September 2007 for contravening the Regulation of Gatherings Act.

At the time, police claimed that the group did not disperse when ordered to do so and arrested her along with a Muslim priest who had accompanied them on the march.

During an interview shortly after her arrest, Zille said that "the last time I saw anything like this was under apartheid, when I was taken in".

She now states that the withdrawal of the charges against her has confirmed her belief that, from the start, there was no reason to have taken her into custody.

Her arrest sparked outrage from the communities affected by drug trade and drew condemnation for the actions of the police from all quarters, including from the African National Congress (ANC), Zille's political rivals.
