The Cape Town City Hall clock, a half scale replica of Big Ben installed in 1905, is in need of repair. Its winding mechanism has failed and the hands on the clock face will probably stop moving this weekend.

Gert Bam, the City's Director: Sport, Recreation and Amenities, said that it would be necessary to import spare parts from England so it could be some time before the clock is functional again.

"At the moment we have to send four employees into the clock tower three times a week to wind the clock, so we will take this opportunity to automate the winding mechanism," Bam said.
