The City of Cape Town has officially launched the first phase of the M12 corridor which will facilitate traffic flow between Cape Towns northern suburbs and the central business district.

The first phase incorporates an extension of Bosmansdam Road in Edgemead, the quarter link to Plattekloof Road and the construction of the new bridge over Plattekloof Road which will form the main link to the M12.

"This long awaited road link is a tremendous boost to the City’s metropolitan road network system," says Cllr James Vos, Chairman of De Grendel Subcouncil and ward councillor for Edgemead and Bothasig, who officiated at the opening on Friday, 7 March 2008 at 12:30. He was joined by the Executive Mayor of Cape Town, Helen Zille.

The major road works which commenced along Plattekloof Road in preparation for the construction of a section of the M12 corridor involving the Giel Basson Drive and Bosmansdam Road extensions, were undertaken in conjunction with the new Burgundy Estate residential development and the City of Cape Town.

Burgundy Estate focuses on creating a high-quality urban environment alongside the natural splendour of the Tygerberg Hills with its panoramic views of Cape Town.

"The new development incorporates a concept whereby public space becomes an extension of the private environment, and the provision of new roads and infrastructure in the area will be of great benefit not only to Burgundy Estate itself, but also to neighbouring communities.

"I am excited and enthusiastic about this new infrastructure, because it is a vital contribution to the metropolitan transport network, and a key to creating a pleasant and sustainable urban environment," says Cllr Vos.

The first phase of the road construction programme consisted of the bridge over Plattekloof Road, and the northward extension of the M12 corridor from its intersection with Plattekloof Road.

The second phase entailed the construction of Bosmansdam Road between Letchworth Drive in Edgemead and the M12 corridor.

The third phase included the construction of the M12 between Bosmansdam Road and Rothschild Boulevard. The extension of Giel Basson Drive in Monte Vista is to commence shortly.

"The completion of Bosmansdam Road Extension contributes to the road infrastructure of our city, which will provide much-needed enhancement to the metropolitan road network," says Cllr Vos.
