In a possible breakthrough in the Mumbai terror probe, two persons, a trader from Srinagar and another from Kolkata, were arrested for allegedly buying mobile SIM cards on the fake IDs which were used by terrorists during the 26 November siege.

Mukhtar Ahmed Sheikh, 35, originally a resident of Rehanbari in Srinagar, who ran a shawl business in Kolkata for some time and married a local girl, was arrested in New Delhi on Friday by Special Task Force of Kolkata Police.

This is according to the Chief of the Special Task Force Rajiv Kumar.

Tauseef Rehman, 26, a resident of Tiljala Road in Kolkata, was arrested from Howrah Railway station.

The two were on Sunday remanded to police custody until 19 December by Chief Metropolitan Magistrate S S Anand.

Public Prosecutor S Pathak submitted that Mr Tauseef used to acquire SIM cards using fake identities and those of dead persons.

"Thirteen such SIM cards were bought by Mr Tauseef which were passed on to Mr Sheikh. Some of these cards were used by terrorists involved in attack in Mumbai," he said.

The two are the first to be arrested after the 60-hour siege ended on 29 November, leaving 183 dead and nearly 300 injured.

Mohammed Ajmal Amir Iman was the only alleged terrorist arrested during the siege while nine others were killed by security forces. - BuaNews-NNN
