Paramedics have launched an appeal to the public to stop making prank phone calls as it inhibits them from carrying out the duties effectively.

This appeal comes after a marked increase in the number of hoax calls received by paramedic services - particularly in the Bellville area.

Four hoax calls were received over the past three days causing the unnecessary wastage of the resources used to respond to these calls.

"These calls are holding up emergency workers from doing their proper jobs in the long run." said Derek Banks, spokesperson for ER24. ".. we take every call as an emergency, no matter what... these calls tie up resources on all sides," he continued.

Police are investigating the incidents.
